Description
Up for your consideration is a simply rare and hard to find exquisite ball room evening dress from the couture house Liberty Shop of New Orleans. There are not many times while offering vintage clothing to you do I come across something as special as this evening gown! I am delighted to offer this vintage early 1950's gorgeous gown to you. The label inside reads, "The Liberty Shop, 2220 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans." There is little information about this couture design house, but the information I did find is interesting. The owners were two sisters, that opened the brick mansion (still stand today and is a bridal shop), in New Orleans, Louisiana. The shop was founded by two women Mrs. E.M. Ragan and Miss Emily Guelton in 1920. Both ladies have been documented to travel to France, and back in the day gowns were transported from France to the USA.
From an interesting article from the Milwaukee Sentinel reads, "Customers were required to make appointments in advance and when they arrived sent in their cards via parlor maids. They were sown to rosewood sofas and chairs in the beautifully appointed rooms with the elaborate cornices, tall pier glasses, mantelpieces and glittering crystal chandeliers.
A decade or so ago Mrs. Ragan and Mrs. Emily died. The present proprietors are Hazel Pearson, Louise Buhler and Camille Henderson according to the Independence. Helen Clark Warner, a New York designer, does their creations. The shop is flooded year around?weddings in the spring, coming-out gowns in the summer and fall, Mardi Gras gowns during lent." Learn More from the July 13, 1950 newspaper article. Also learn more from the St Petersburg Times newspaper.
After making an investment in this ballroom evening gown I contacted a vintage clothing seller, from which she recently sold the same label, Liberty Shop wedding dress, of course it is more elaborate and can be worn as a wedding dress. Gorgeous! That one sold for $15,000! Designed by the same couture shop!
Let's talk about this exquisite ballroom evening dress, as you can see from the pictures it is quite a beauty! Sleeveless with a plunging sweetheart neckline on a fitted bodice. Across your shoulders is a lightweight light pink velvet with the pink velvet trailing down the front center of the bodice and alternating panels in the full skirt . Accenting the pink is a silk deep midnight blue damask silk with gold metallic roses in the weave of the fabric. The dress also has rhinestones along the front and back of the dress as a outline highlight. The bodice is boned for added support and the skirt has a built in crinoline and slip. Zips down the back for closure. Please ask any and ALL questions before purchasing. All sales are final.
